Through the genius and ingenuity of Helio Gracie, the art was refined to truly give an advantage to the smaller, weaker individual. Jiu-jitsu is mainly known for its effectiveness in fighting from the ground position. However, it is equally effective from the standing position, making use of escapes, holds, chokes, joint manipulation, and throws.
